G'day

The trouble with teaching theology to children is that they believe you. So you’d better be careful! Here are some tried and true songs, all fully tested at various kids clubs and beach missions and known to work. You’ll find some of them a bit raucous, so that kids, particularly boys, will like them.

Kids don’t understand all that much, so it’s been kept simple: God made you and God loves you is the basic message. One rector I know has almost made God doesn’t like it when I’m bad, but he still loves me his theme song.

My thanks go to John Lane of Scripture Union Australia for his permission to publish his words of Wide, wide as the oceans. It remains the best boys songs ever written as you get to hit the person next to you while you’re singing it. The new words are much clearer and so you no longer have to be like my mother, who used to sing:

I though so unworthy, still I’m the top of his head........

My thanks go to my family for putting up with me and letting me know which songs were any good and to Simon and Joshua for the backing singing. Also to Jeremy Mills for his help with the arrangement of Even When I’m In Trouble.

Feel free to copy this material in any form if you need to for the use of one church or community, but please, don’t copy the tape or the music to give to someone else. God loves a cheerful giver. Buy them one!

I am available to come and sing these songs to you (02 4821 9248). but as I am a professional performer there is a fee involved.

May God richly bless you as you use these songs. And remember, heresy though it may be: God is better than football.
